In today’s society where magazines
air brush the photos of black women making them appear one shade or even two to
three shades lighter than their original color, where walking on the street
could get judgments passed because of darker skin color it is hard to have the
self-esteem to progress with the prejudices surrounding the black women.
The shooting of blacks is, sadly,
a norm in the United States, this phenomena not only includes black men, but
also African American women where the Chicago Sun Times reports the horrendous
incident of the shooting of an African American woman of 22 namely Rekia Boyd
by an off-duty officer.
The prejudice against the blacks
has had a long history, so it seems, though it still exists in the United
States as of today. Such prejudices give birth to obstructions being faced by
the blacks to climb the ladder of success. During the Great Recession the black
women were hit hard, but it did not end and exceeded where the unemployment
rate went on from 8.2 percent to 9.2 percent.
Black
women do not possess the wealth to
transfer to their younger generations and SacObserver suggests that they reply
on the Social Security benefits after retiring as their only income. Once again
the society blames the black women, but the obstruction has no limit that is
being faced by the black community.
It so happens that the poverty
stricken black community earns only so much that can guarantee only survival by
fulfilling the bare necessities where they do not have enough money to start
businesses or utilize the savings in real estate or stock exchange.
SacObserver conducted a Census Population
Survey in 2013 where it was found:
·
Black women
with master’s degree earn slightly less than black men with a Bachelor’s degree
·
Black women
earn slightly less than the White men, Asians and Latinos with associates or
post-secondary degrees.
So the SacObserver concluded that
the wage gap persists and even the education cannot solve it.
If the bad news is that the
poverty stricken black women have less means to survive the good news is that
the black women in rural areas are less likely to be depressed. According to US National Survey of American
African Life Style:
·
Non-Hispanic
white women – with 21.3% - had a higher lifetime prevalence of major
depression.
·
The African
American women only had 10.1%
·
Even if the
white women lived in rural areas they would still have higher prevalence of
major depression than the black women.
This could suggest the high
tolerance black women have to the societal obstructions they face and have been
facing since decades as compared to the white women.
A program has been initiated by
Radio One which will empower the black women to utilize their finances in a
clever way. According to Vice President, Corporate Communications, Radio One,
Inc. Yashima White AziLove, “I’m excited to be the One VIP Card ambassador and
have the opportunity to empower black women to better manage their finances and
establish healthy fiscal management practices for their children through the use
of card.”
Such programs are much needed for
the empowerment of black women as this would not only assist in the dilemma of
poor money savings, but also the empowerment is necessary for the betterment of
the black community.
